Periodontal Therapy

What is Periodontal Therapy?

Periodontal therapy is a treatment for gum disease (also called periodontitis). Gum disease occurs when bacteria build up on your teeth and gums, causing inflammation, infection, and even tooth loss if untreated.

Why Do You Need Periodontal Therapy?

You may need periodontal therapy if you have:

  • Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
  • Bad breath
  • Receding gums (gums pulling away from teeth)
  • Loose teeth

Treating gum disease early can help protect your teeth and gums.

Types of Periodontal Therapy

  1. Scaling and Root Planing: A deep cleaning procedure to remove plaque and tartar from below the gumline and smooth the tooth roots to help gums reattach.
  2. Gum Surgery: In more severe cases, surgery may be needed to remove deep pockets of infection and repair damaged tissue.
  3. Maintenance: Regular dental checkups and cleanings help keep your gums healthy and prevent further problems.

Does Periodontal Therapy Hurt?

The treatment is done with local anesthesia to keep you comfortable. Mild soreness may follow, but it quickly improves.

Why is it Important?

Healthy gums support your teeth. Treating gum disease early can prevent tooth loss and other serious health problems.
