Myofunctional Appliance

Myofunctional appliance refer to orthodontic devices that combine traditional braces with the principles of myofunctional therapy to correct both tooth alignment and improper oral muscle function. Unlike conventional braces, which primarily focus on straightening teeth, myofunctional braces aim to address underlying issues with muscle function, posture, and habits that may be contributing to misalignment or improper jaw development. Below are some key examples of myofunctional appliances and their uses:

1. Myobrace®

The Myobrace® system is a preventive pre-orthodontic treatment used to correct oral habits and align teeth naturally, often without the need for braces. It focuses on improving muscle function related to breathing, swallowing, and the positioning of the lips and tongue.

2. Frankel Functional Regulator (FR)

The Frankel appliance is used to guide the growth of the jaws and teeth by creating space for proper tongue posture and by training the facial muscles to function correctly. It encourages the forward growth of the lower jaw and corrects improper muscle habits.

3. Twin Block Appliance

A Twin Block appliance is used to correct Class II malocclusions, where the lower jaw is positioned too far back. This appliance stimulates forward growth of the lower jaw, correcting the bite and improving the balance between the upper and lower jaws

4. Lip Bumpers

Lip bumpers are used to create space in the lower arch by placing pressure on the molars to push them back and make room for crowded front teeth. The bumper also helps by separating the lips from the teeth, training the muscles to reduce pressure on the front teeth.
